The Yacon plant is a perennial and can reach five to seven feet tall. A relative of the sunflower, it has dark green celery-like leaves and produces tiny yellow flowers at the end of the growing season. Below the earth it grows tasty roots that have been used as a food source for many centuries in the Andes. The tuberous roots of the Yacon are crisp and juicy, with an exotic flavor that has been described as a blend of sweet apples and watermelon.

Turmeric roots are either used fresh or boiled and then dried before being ground into a fine powder. This vibrant powder is often used as aspice in ethnic cuisine as well as an ingredient in dyes. Turmeric powder alone is rather bitter, with a potent, earthy flavor.
While the roots are the most commonly used component of the Turmeric plant, the long, glossy, green leaves also have their place in the culinary world. They are sometimes used to wrap and cook food, or in curry bases.
One of the biggest contributing factors to Turmeric's amazing benefits is the polyphenolcurcumin, which is also responsible for itsdistinctive orange-yellow hue.
Research on curcumin shows it to be potentially beneficial for prostate health. There is also evidence suggesting curcumin as a contributing factor for maintaining mental health, as well as a promoter of joint health. This amazing compound may even be helpful for gastrointestinal health and maintaining blood sugar levels already in the normal range.
In addition to the vitamins and minerals Turmeric contains, this brightly-colored root also contains the essential fatty acids omega-3 and omega-6. These essential fatty acids are not produced by the human body, and must be taken in through foods such as Turmeric.
